Ian Mahinmi Talks His Role, The Bench, and Shooting Threes

On the bench play compared to last year:

“I think well. I felt like we have really good games. Guys like each other and like to play together. The hardest thing for bench guys is to find their role. I felt like now everyone has a good understanding of their role and what they bring to the table and what they need to do to help the team win.”

On next step for the bench:

“Keep getting consistent as far as our energy. That is the stuff that we can control. Playing defense, make sure we communicate, play together and for each other. I think the rest will take care of itself.”

On his role:

“Always start with defense. Make sure I have everybody’s back and being vocal and being that kind of defensive anchor for everybody. Offensively, being a facilitator and helping my guys, set good screens, rolling, being available for my guys. Kind of want to be a glue guy. I think it’s been better.”

On his health:

“It’s coming back. I started feeling like myself. Knees are feeling better. It’s definitely on its way and in the right direction.”

On shooting three-pointers in practice:

“After practice, I have a routine and this year we added a little corner three. It’s nothing crazy, just shooting drills. Just testing the waters, see what I can do. I’m always somebody that is very open minded as far as skills and what I want to work on my game. Shooting corner threes ain’t going to hurt nobody, that don’t mean I’m going to shoot it in a game. It’s fun.”

On moves in the paint:

“I go both ways. I like to shoot hooks with my left hand, but I also like to shoot with my right depending how I get the ball. I always work on both hands.”
