10 Wild and Wacky Occurrences From Wizards-76ers

The Washington Wizards lost to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night 118-113 on the second leg of a back-to-back. The final score was surprisingly close after it looked like the road team would be run out of the building as they were down as much as 24 points including 22 points, 89-67, with 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Here is a list of all of the wacky occurrences and records that took place in the game.

  • Washington went on a 30-11 run during a seven-minute stretch of the 4th quarter to reduce a 24-point deficit to just three. The secret was Hack-a-Simmons as the 56.6 percent free throw shooter began the frame shooting 5 of 12 from the charity stripe.

  • The Wizards had 48-points in the 4th quarter, which is tied with November 15, 1985 vs. Boston for the franchise best for the 4th quarter. The 48-point showing in the quarter is tied for the third most points by the team in any quarter in team history. The Baltimore Bullets had 52 points in the second quarter against Detroit on December 18, 1965.

  • Ben Simmons shot 24 free throws in the 4th quarter, which is the most by a single player ever in a quarter, a record previously held by Ben Wallace who shot 20 free throws against the Los Angeles Clippers on December 11, 2005. Simmons’ 29 free throw attempts were the most against the Wizards by an individual in team history. Charles Barkley had 27 on December 20, 1995 in an overtime game. The 29 were also the most by a rookie in one game.

  • The 76ers shot 64 free throws, including 37 in the 4th quarter, which is the most the Wizards have given up in a game since the Chicago Zephyrs allowed 67 to be attempted by Syracuse on December 7, 1962.

  • The Wizards committed a franchise high 42 personal fouls, obviously several of them were intentional. The previous high was 39 in 1995 in an overtime loss to the Warriors.

  • The Wizards gave up 64 rebounds to the 76ers, which is tied for 19th most in team history. It is just the second time since 2005 that Washington has allowed 64 or more rebounds as they gave up 67 on February 20, 2016 at Miami.

  • The Wizards bench had 67 points against the 76ers and has 116 over a 26-hour, two-game span. For the second straight game and just the second time this season, the bench outscored the starters. Twice through 21 games this season is the same number of times the bench outscored the starters last season (March 24, 2017 vs. Brooklyn and April 12, 2017 at Miami).

  • Otto Porter Jr.’s 3-for-14 shooting night (21.4 percent) was the worst in his career when having more than 10 FGA.

  • Bradley Beal committed six fouls, to disqualify himself, in 3:23 of action in the fourth quarter.

  • Kelly Oubre Jr. had the quietest career-high scoring game in recent recollection with 22 points off the bench on 7 of 15 shooting.
